AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what actually changes for a website

Two Google surfaces, one eligibility model. Do not write a second site for AI Mode.

Published

Google now has two generative surfaces most teams mix up.

AI Overviews appear above or inside classic Search results. They summarize, then link out to supporting pages.

AI Mode is the conversational Search experience: follow-up questions, longer reasoning, still grounded in the Search index when it shows supporting links.

Google’s AI features documentation treats them together. Eligibility is the same: indexed, snippet-eligible, and included in Search generative AI features. Search Console’s generative AI performance report counts impressions from both.

What does not change on the website

You do not need a second template, a second URL, or a second schema type for AI Mode. Query fan-out still retrieves pages that already look like Search documents: crawlable HTML, a clear title, an answer in text.

If the answer lives only in a client component, AI Mode will not magically render it. Googlebot can. Many other AI crawlers cannot. Keep the canonical answer in the first HTML response.

What does change for measurement

Impressions in the generative AI report are not clicks, and they are not citations in ChatGPT. They are “a link to your site was shown in an AI feature.” Use that report to see which URLs appear. Use a website audit to see why a URL never does.

Ahrefs and Semrush sell AI Overview / AI Mode trackers as suite add-ons. Profound and Otterly sample prompts across engines. Those products answer “did we show up.” They do not answer “is the page blocked.” Compare them on the Siteory vs Profound and Siteory vs Ahrefs pages.

Practical split for a sprint

  1. Confirm Search Console inclusion for generative AI features.
  2. Fix crawl and snippet eligibility on the URLs that should be sources.
  3. Put one quotable paragraph under a question heading.
  4. Then, if you still need a time series, buy a tracker.

Do not rewrite the site “for AI Mode.” Rewrite the paragraph that should be cited.

See what your website is really exposing.
