How pages become eligible for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Eligibility is not a citation. Index, snippet, and Search Console inclusion come first. Then write a passage worth quoting.
What Google published in 2026
AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve supporting links from the Search index. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements and no special schema.org type for AI features.
Search Console now has a generative AI performance report for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a Search generative AI control that can include or exclude the site from those features. As of 31 August 2026 that control is worldwide. Exclusion is not a ranking boost for classic results. It just removes the site from those AI surfaces.
What to do on the site this week
Confirm the property is included in Search generative AI features. Confirm the page is indexable and not blocked by nosnippet. Put the answer in crawlable text. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile data accurate if you are local or commerce. Then write one paragraph a model can lift without the hero slogan.
Siteory will not log into Search Console for you. It will tell you if the HTML a bot downloads is empty, untitled, or missing identity — the usual reasons a page is eligible on paper and invisible in answers.
